The Animals & Man building, opened in 1966 as the Large Mammal Building. While its inhabitants have changed over the decades, it currently is home to the Zoo's African elephant, Asian Elephant, River Hippopotami, Giraffes, Colobus, Lemurs, Storks, Cranes and other smaller species.
A large fenced exhibit for the Zoo's elephants was expanded in 1997. A sidewalk allows visitors to walk around the exhibit to view the elephants playing in the mud and enjoying their new habitat. In 2004, the elephants exhibit was updated with a pool and shade structure.
The zoo opened a new outdoor exhibit and pool in May 2004 for the zoo's hippos Peka Sue and Submarie. This pool provides over 2,000 square feet of additional living space and a 28,000 gallon outdoor pool.
